Urinary Urgency in Men: Why You Feel Like You Need to Go All the Time

A specialist explains the causes of urinary urgency and frequency in men and what actually helps

Urinary Urgency in Men: Why You Feel Like You Need to Go All the Time

Needing to go to the toilet more often than usual can be frustrating, disruptive, and difficult to understand.

Some men feel like they constantly need to go, even when the bladder is not full.

Others notice increased frequency during the day, at night, or both.

This is something we see regularly in clinic, and it is often not caused by a problem with the bladder itself.

The key thing to understand is this.

Urinary urgency and frequency are often linked to how the pelvic floor and nervous system are functioning.

Common symptoms include:

Feeling a strong urge to urinate
Going to the toilet more frequently than normal
Difficulty holding on once the urge appears
Waking at night to pass urine
A feeling of incomplete emptying

For many men, medical tests come back normal.

This can be confusing, especially when symptoms are clearly present.

In these cases, the issue is often functional rather than structural.

One of the main drivers we see is pelvic floor overactivity.

When the pelvic floor muscles are tight or not coordinating properly, they can affect how the bladder signals and empties.

This can create a constant feeling of urgency, even when the bladder is not full.

Another key factor is the nervous system.

If the body is in a more sensitive or “on edge” state, bladder signals can become amplified.

This makes the urge to urinate feel stronger and more frequent than it should.

Stress, anxiety, and increased awareness of symptoms can all contribute.

Lifestyle factors can also play a role, including:

High caffeine intake
Fluid habits
Prolonged sitting
Changes in activity levels

Once symptoms begin, they can become self-perpetuating.

Men often start to plan around toilets, go “just in case”, or monitor symptoms closely.

This can increase sensitivity and keep the cycle going.

At London Men’s Health, we take a structured approach.

Assessment focuses on understanding your symptoms, identifying triggers, and assessing pelvic floor function and nervous system involvement.

Treatment may include:

Pelvic floor relaxation and coordination work
Bladder retraining strategies
Breathing and nervous system regulation
Reducing symptom-driven behaviours
Lifestyle adjustments where needed

The aim is to normalise bladder function and reduce sensitivity.

Most men improve significantly once the underlying drivers are addressed.

If you are experiencing urinary urgency or frequency, it is worth getting it properly assessed rather than trying to manage it on your own.
